This was the view of the lane from my apartment this morning. Smoko time for three of the city's beggars. I didn't go down to get a closer look because it would have been intruding and it would have cost me money, but there was fragrant smoke and laughter and animated conversation. Perhaps they were discussing us.
Elsewhere in the city, it was business as usual.
I'm sure the proponents of trickle-down economics would say that a stronger economy, driven by higher retail sales, will benefit homeless people. But I'm damned if I can make the connection. xx
ReplyDeleteYou're right, Farmdoc, there's little sympathy for the weak in our society. But they were still the happiest and most relaxed people I saw all day.
ReplyDeleteI've noticed during decades of observation, that homeless alcoholic men invariably have full heads of hair. And your photograph bears this out. It may be an effect of the alcohol. Alternatively it may be the effect of being happy and relaxed (as you describe the three in your photograph). It's an interesting question. There's a PhD in it for someone. xx
ReplyDeleteI was homeless for 8 years, during which time I took the opportunity to hitch hike around the world, the happiest and most carefree years of my life, plus, I still got some hair, although 3 year old Maeve recently told me, pointing at my solar panel, that I have a hole in my hair.....
